InnerView Insights is heading to Paris for the CIGRE Session 2026, bringing together power-system specialists, utilities, researchers and technology providers from around the world.
This year is particularly significant for us, with InnerView contributing a technical paper through Study Committee B2 – Overhead Lines on the use of ultrasound for non-destructive condition assessment of wooden utility poles.
Our work with the UB1000 focuses on a practical challenge faced by electricity networks globally: understanding the internal condition of an ageing wooden pole without relying solely on external inspection or destructive testing.
What we’re looking forward to
CIGRE provides a valuable opportunity to compare approaches being taken by utilities and engineering organisations around the world.
There are several areas we’re particularly interested in exploring in Paris:
Better condition assessment
Moving from time-based inspection and subjective assessment towards better evidence about actual asset condition. For wooden poles, this includes techniques capable of identifying internal deterioration that may not be apparent from the outside.
Extending the life of existing infrastructure
Replacing an asset is not always the best answer. Better inspection, engineering assessment and targeted remediation can help utilities make more informed decisions about which assets can safely remain in service and which require intervention.
Digitising field measurement
We’ll also be demonstrating Axonic, which enables field teams to capture measurements and asset information for overhead-line engineering using readily deployable digital tools.
We’re particularly interested in how utilities are connecting better field data with engineering analysis, GIS and asset-management systems.
Practical innovation
CIGRE brings together an enormous range of technology and engineering expertise. We’re looking forward to seeing the latest developments in inspection, measurement, diagnostics and asset management, and talking with the people responsible for putting these technologies to work in real networks.
